Email Lists: Why You Need Them, How To Use Them
Page 1: Introduction - Why Email Lists?
I often use email lists as examples when speaking to church leaders who believe that technology is all glitz and glamour, with little true time savings. Why? Because email lists beat most methods of church communication hands-down when it comes to effectiveness and efficiency.
What else gives you the power to quickly deliver informative messages to hundreds of people, at such a low cost? The only thing that compares is the "Phone Tree" system, which costs a few hundred dollars--and the messages it sends are gone as soon as you hear them!
In this article, I'll walk you through the basic choices you have when it comes to types of email lists--then we'll look at some of the "dos and don'ts" of lists. If you take this information to heart, you'll have a better-informed church in no time!
One other thing--many churches underestimate the number of people using email in their congregation. I would encourage you to get a handle on this number by taking a simple survey. If too few people in your church use email, then email lists may not be the way to go. But my experience has been that 80-90% of American churchgoers have email--this is certainly a high enough percentage to warrant the use of email lists.
