Define Your Site's Users

Page 1: Introduction

Many church web sites fail because there wasn't enough legwork done before the site was developed. One of the most neglected tasks in church web development is the concrete defining of the site's users. Since it's the users who will define the success of your site, it makes no sense to create content without them in mind.

Some would argue that the web is world wide in its very nature, and targetting specific people doesn't make sense. While it is true that anyone can visit your site, this does not mean that you should build the site to suit anyone. Should you build your church site to suit people looking for stock market news, free MP3s, or pornography? Of course not. These people may stumble across your site, but they aren't the people who will define its success. The important users are those who will visit your site, and want to return because of the content found there.

Let's look at some basic questions you can ask to narrow down your user population. Then we'll look at creating user profiles to make this target population come to life. Note: this exercise is best done in a "web team" setting, as the added brains make for more informed decisions.
